Custard slice recipe with cream crackers vintage

I love love custard. Warm custard on the warm baked pudding jogs my memory of home. It is really a comfort factor. Custard slices help remind me of home too. It was once my responsibility, on the Sunday morning, cooking up a load of custard slices in my family to savor after our morning church meeting. In those days, I'd use cream cracker biscuits because the "crust"(if you're able to even refer to it as that!) making a custard with custard powder, milk and a few cornflour to thicken it. However I made the decision to tweak the initial recipe a little (ok fine, a great deal) with this batch.

Rather of utilizing cream crackers, I made the decision on how to use some ready-made puff pastry. I work onto rectangles, most likely about 90mm by 70mm, but simply as this permitted me to obtain 8 nice size rectangles from the roll of pastry - the dimensions is completely your decision. You can even eliminate cute pastry shapes having a standard (which really attracts me, however i just did not have enough time for your with this particular batch). I brushed some beaten egg around the rectangles and baked them until they'd "puffed" coupled with began to show golden brown. I whipped them from the oven and allow them to awesome around the baking tray.

While all this was happening, I began around the custard. When I had pointed out, I'd always made the custard part as reported by the instructions around the jar, but added some cornflour to thicken it. However it found me (after botching up a pot filled with custard when you are impatient excessively eager, I simply stored adding a little bit of extra powder if this did not thicken quick enough. It switched out extra extra thick, you can mould it like jelly!) Why would you use extra cornflour, when you are able simply make a 4th choice of EXTRA THICK with the addition of only a tiny small little more of this darn good yellow powder!

To ensure that is exactly what Used to do!

Only one other deviation in the instructions (yes, I understand, I actually do try follow them truly get side tracked) rather of adding the sugar, I put inside a 1/3 of the can of condensed milk. Yummy!

I managed to get while using microwave method, and from the thin milky mixture to some thick custard, it required about 7 minutes. Very fast and quite simple!

As the custard cooled slightly, I switched attention to the pastry. I made a simple form of royal icing by mixing some icing sugar with a few boiling water until a pleasant flowing consistency was arrived at and smeared it at the base half therefore the whole side was covered after which drizzled it outrageous half.

I Then spooned the marginally cooled custard (even though it was still being pretty hot) right into a plastic piping bag, snipped from the tip (no nozzle needed) and pipped the custard to the bottom 1 / 2 of the pastry.

I Then sprang on top half.

. and left these to awesome and permit the custard to create before we gobbled them up!

I believe the entire process required about 30min, pretty good for an easy and quick treat!

I believe the next time I'll try heart formed custard slices! That bit of extra effort always goes a lengthy way!

I totally chose to make this as I had been going along - and so i don't have any real, set measurements etc, however these are, so far as I remember fondly the steps and measurements I made use of:

1 roll ready-made puff pastry
1 egg
1 cup icing sugar
just a little boiling water

  • Cut the pastry into rectangles (or other shape) maintaining your figures even (you'll need two per slice!)
  • Brush with a few beaten egg and bake at 180 levels Celsius until just turning golden brown
  • Have royal icing by mixing a little bit of water using the icing sugar, ONE TEASPOON At Any Given Time, before you JUST achieve a running consistency. (Should you pour it, it will not be thick like gloop, however it wont just run either. It ought to gradually create a nice ribbon consistency)
  • Cover the main one side from the bottom bit of pastry using the icing
  • Drizzle some icing outrageous bit of pastry

For that custard:

4 1/two tablespoons Custard Powder
1/3 can of Condensed Milk
2 cups Milk

  • Mix all of the ingredients together
  • Microwave on high for around 7 minutes, stirring every 2 minutes
  • Whenever a thick consistency is arrived at, allow it to awesome for a few minutes
  • Pipe or spoon custard to the bottom bit of the pastry
  • Place the top piece on the top from the custard and then leave to awesome for any couple of minutes
  • Devote the fridge to relax for and hour and serve
