The about face Fifth Avenue is exemplified in miniature by Blue Sky Loaves of bread, a captivating, small shop, thriving within the North Slope since 2003. Owner Erik Goetze, an old design student with experience of advertising, gives creedence to the comforts of excellent, clean design, using the space’s whitewashed walls, lemon-yellow woodwork and black Turkish marble tile, in addition to a glass showcase of vintage housewares for purchase. The sunny dcor sets the atmosphere for that bakery’s primary attraction—muffins—which Blue Sky sells wholesale to cafes and restaurants in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, and retail in a quick pace to local commuters who breakfast around the $3 week day muffin-and-coffee special. Moist, dense bran muffins packed with fruit and nuts lead the trade, adopted carefully by sugar-dusted wild blueberry muffins and pita-sized chocolate chunk cookies. The shop even makes its very own doggy treats. One half-dozen caf-tables invite lingering over sweets, espresso or iced coffee, made double strength and packing a caffeine punch.
