Joel Salatin's chicken feed recipes
My personal favorite a part of Pastured Chicken Profits was the chapter dedicated to demystifying chicken feed. Joel Salatin raises enough chickens he can order his feed custom-blended, and he's done lots of experimentation to look for the recipes that actually work perfect for him. He believes to keep the mix as easy as possible and taking advantage of real ingredients.
Listed here are the constituents of Salatin's broiler mix (and why he includes each component):
- 52% corn --- For carbohydrates
- 29% roasted soybeans --- For protein
- 11% crimped oatmeal --- These contain protein and carbs, but Salatin mainly includes oatmeal due to the fiber within the hulls.
- 3.5% Ocean-Lac brand fish meal --- He prefers this brand due to their low-heat processing, which will help preserve minerals and vitamins. Another reason for fish meal would be to provide protein.
- 3% Fertrell Nutri-Balancer --- For minerals and vitamins. (See below.)
- 1% feed grade limestone --- For calcium
- .5% algae meal --- For minerals. Salatin recommends selecting algae meal grown in cold water and dried geothermally.
- .1% Fastrack probiotic --- To advertise digestion and raise the defense mechanisms. This brand method is created by Conklin Co. Corporation. and Salatin states they've the greatest number of Lactobaccillus acidophilus. with no fillers present in other brands of probiotics.
Salatin performed alongside comparisons of numerous brands of "snake oil" (his term), determined that his chickens increased faster and remained healthier as he added Fertrell Nutri-Balancer towards the mix. He would rather avoid chemically formulated minerals and vitamins given that they break lower readily in warm weather and therefore are tougher for the chickens to assimilate than are minerals and vitamins from natural sources, so he was glad to locate a natural source. Now we all know in which the Fertrell Nutri-Balancer craze began!
