Before the 1800s, most cookbooks were written for chefs by other chefs. This is when upper-class women started writing cooking instructions for common families. The cook book genre as you may know it today, however, was created within the late 1800s by Fannie Player.
Player, the Director of Miss Farmer's School of Cookery, trained practical cooking to housewives and self-printed The Boston Cooking School Prepare Book in 1896. Whereas recipes accustomed to require a "sprinkle" of the along with a "pinch" of this, Player implemented uniform measurements and syntax that's still used today. Versions of her book continue to be printed.
Before the late 1700s, cookbooks in the usa were printed in England or featured British foods. The very first all-American cook book was American Cookery by Amelia Simmons, printed in 1798. These distinct recipes used foods natively grown within the U.S. for example pumpkins.
