i see a lot of people substituting a lot of ingredients within this recipe, which kinda defeats the reason. ive used it for a long time, this can be a genuine sauce recipe from somebody that understood much better than us. for example, the fennel is really a key component so don't skip it. after i didnt have and so i added a little bit of vodka which to my suprise labored ok but different, do not be lazy get the fennel. a can of puree tomatoe is equivalent to a sauce/patse mix or try diced tomatoe's ran via a good chopper for any chunkier juicer style sauce. apart from that you are able to sub fresh parsley and a little bit of celery salt for celery inside a pinch. i usually boost the sugar and pepper for any nice contrast. and even perhaps then add red pepper to taste for any spicier version but dont go nuts by using it.

This sauce doesn't need another five star review. but it is so great, I desired to speak about it. I've made lots of sauces (thick thin, fresh tomato plants, canned,etc. ) - many are good and a few blah. However this sauce isn't just GOOD, it is good. Perfect pizza flavor. It jogs my memory of NY pizza sauce (that is saying something). Dont skimp around the butter and oil. it truly lends a wonderful flavor. Should you your investment fennel or do not have it - do not worry, will still be GREAT. However it does add something - LOVE THIS RECIPE

Awesome recipe! I created using 1/2 teaspoon ground fennel there could be no whole seeds. Very wealthy and flavorful sauce.
