I don’t know should there be words to explain the masterdom from the She Crab Soup in the Ocean Captain’s House Restaurant in Myrtle Beach, SC. It’s exactly that good — like lick the bowl clean good.


Why is She Crab diverse from most chowders may be the omission of taters, or other veggie for instance, and adding sherry. It’s a hot, velvety combination that highlights the new crab meat within the most decadent, (and scrumptious!) possible way.

When I came back home from the trip, I rushed to Google for that award-winning recipe — as it turned out, Ocean Captain’s House makes their famous She Crab Soup recipe freely available &... no copycat recipe needed! ENJOY!

Ocean Captain’s House She Crab Soup Recipe

  • 2 large onions, diced
  • 1 cup clarified butter
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 and 1/2 quarts half-and-half
  • 1 quart heavy cream
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoon. ground mace
  • 1 cup sherry, top quality
  • 1 pound fresh white-colored crab meat, should be top quality
  • pepper and salt to taste
  1. In large stockpot, prepare onions in butter until soft.
  2. Add flour, reduce heat to low, stirring constantly for fifteen minutes.
  3. Add dairy food and continue stirring.
  4. Add remaining ingredients and simmer for half an hour, stirring frequently.
  5. Drizzle sherry on the top of every portion when prepared to serve.
