Clitopilus prunulus may also be known as the "Sweetbread Mushroom," or "The Miller"--references to the mealy odor. The smell, labeled "farinaceous" in Mycologese, may also be when compared to odor of a classic grain mill (are you currently in a single recently?), or of watermelon rind. Besides the odor, identifying features for that species include:
The ridged spores of Clitopilus prunulus are interesting, and supply a great indication the microscope renders a 2-dimensional picture of a 3-dimensional object. It almost seems as if there's two very various kinds of spores being created through the same mushroom--until one imagines how much of an (American) football with ridges might seem like when viewed in the finish.
Ecosystem: Saprobic growing alone, scattered, or gregariously under hardwoods or conifers, in grassy areas and open forest summer time and fall, or perhaps in winter in warmer climates apparently broadly distributed in The United States.
Cap: 3-12 cm convex having a somewhat inrolled margin, becoming flat or irregular, frequently having a wavy margin dry (or, in var. orcellus. slimy) finely suedelike or nearly bald white-colored, buff, or pale grayish.
Gills: Running lower the stem close or almost distant whitish initially, then pinkish.
Stem: 2-8 cm lengthy as much as 1.5 cm thick sometimes off-center equal solid bald dry white-colored or pale grayish.
Flesh: Fairly firm white-colored constant when sliced.
Microscopic Features. Spores 8-12 x 4-6 µ ellipsoid with dramatically pinched ends ridged lengthwise angular to cruciform when viewed in the finish. Hymenial cystidia absent. Pileipellis a cutis or ixocutis of elements 3-6 µ wide. Clamp connections absent.
