Whenever you’re gluten-free, there’s that moment when it becomes clear that &... you are able to’t have traditional licorice. However there’s that moment when you discover that you could help make your own gluten-free red cherry licorice at home—and it’s easy!
Great gluten-free licorice isn't an easy factor to find. There's a couple of packaged brands, however they’re crazy lunatic costly, as well as simply awful. Should you panic at the idea of cooking sugar, stop that right now! We’ll be together all the way. You need to do require a chocolate thermometer, but individuals are super cheap and extremely very helpful. With no thermometer, you'll either prepare the mix too lengthy (and burn the butter or finish track of hard chocolate), or not enough, and also the chocolate won’t harden. Take a look at that which you have awaiting you. Gorgeous, glorious gluten-free red cherry licorice. Much better than any licorice you've ever had, even B.G.F. (before.gluten.free).
Red cherry licorice was always my faaaaaavorite. Its keep was an accidents with overeating Twizzlers after i would be a kid. The aftermath wasn’t pretty, and wasn’t easily forgotten. However I’m back, baby, and that i’m loving every minute from it! Licorice is the fact that strange chocolate that generally has wheat flour inside it. It will help to stabilize the chocolate, making it less like soft caramel without which makes it into hard chocolate.
I really like you a lot which i’m even willing to inform you these less-than-gorgeous photographs from the sugar mixture, because it cooks. Said I’d be around you usually and forever.
Oh, and that i attempted cutting the chocolate into strips with each and every types of knife from sharp to dull, clean to serrated. I Then attempted kitchen shears. Bingo!
Should you’re really into black licorice, you'll need black food coloring + anise flavoring oil. No biggie. LorAnn flavoring oils are gluten-free, plus they’re most evident-to-taste. Me? I’m by pointing out gluten-free red cherry licorice.
RECIPE NOTE: I don’t like using molasses within this recipe because it features a quite strong taste and color, each of which I finish up getting to beat with increased food coloring and much more flavoring oil. Should you don’t have/can’t find/don’t desire to use Lyle’s Golden Syrup, try honey.
Prep time: a few minutes Prepare time: >10 minutes Yield: About 24 pieces (based upon size)
Ingredients
1/4 teaspoon xanthan gum (omit in case your blend already contains it)
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon cherry flavoring oil (LorAnn brand is gluten-free)
Red gel food coloring, as preferred (about 1/4 teaspoon)
8 tablespoons (112 g) unsalted butter, at 70 degrees
1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
8 tablespoons (168 g) light corn syrup
1/2 cup (156 g) sweetened condensed milk
4 tablespoons (84 g) Lyle’s golden syrup (can substitute the same amount honey or molasses)
Directions
Grease well a 9-inch square baking dish with butter or vegetable shortening, and hang it aside. Assemble your ingredients near the stovetop. In a tiny bowl, put the flour, xanthan gum and salt, and whisk to mix well. Set the flavoring oil along with a calculating spoon, as well as the food coloring, aside, within arm’s achieve.
Inside a large, heavy-bottom saucepan, put the butter, sugar, corn syrup, sweetened condensed milk and Lyle’s Golden Syrup (or honey or molasses). Prepare over medium-high temperature before the mixture reaches a boil, stirring constantly. Lower heat to medium therefore the mixture keeps a slow boil, and then prepare before the temperature reaches 240°F on the chocolate thermometer. Any greater and also the butter will burn. Any lower and also the licorice won’t with enough contentration because it cools.
Take away the mixture in the heat and add some flour mixture. Working rapidly, mix everything well. Add some flavoring oil and food coloring (I generally make use of a toothpick to include gel food coloring), and blend well once more.
Pour the chocolate in to the prepared baking dish, and shake it backwards and forwards that it is within an even layer. Put the baking dish within the refrigerator and chill for half an hour. Take away the baking dish in the refrigerator, and, having a thin spatula or any other thin kitchen implement, take away the chocolate successfully in the baking dish onto a set surface. With kitchen shears, cut the square of chocolate in two, after which cut each half into 1/4-inch wide strips. Twist the strips at both sides to produce the standard licorice spiral. Let it spend time at 70 degrees until slightly hardened, and serve.

Hi, John! I’m so glad you published after which makes them! Really, I attempted almost every other sharp implement within my kitchen except the pizza wheel! I ended at kitchen shears given that they labored very well, however it’s great to understand the pizza wheel was easy peasy. Seems like it may be even simpler compared to shears. So glad you enjoyed them, and just nice note!
